herbs.
DELACET has been named the Best
Head Lice Product by Prima magazine, September
2003.
To use it as a cleanser:
Apply neat from the bottle to dry hair. Make all hair and
scalp well saturated with Delacet, pin up hair if long and
wear an old shower cap to protect yourself and clothes from
solution dripping. Leave it on for 2-3 hours then shampoo
and dry hair as usual.
To use it as a repellent:
Pour some Delacet into a spare spray bottle and spray hair
once in 3-4 places around the head before child goes to
school. Alternatively, dib your fingers in Delacet and apply
to hair in 3-4 places. Repeat every day.
DELACET is a tincture so it is
runny like water. How much you need to use depends on the
volume of hair treated. As a rough guide, please note that 3
little boys with short hair will require one bottle, but a
girl with longer or thicker hair will need more solution. If
in doubt please contact us for an advice.
DELACET is a long awaited
child-friendly "green" alternative formula, which
puts parents in control and takes a lot of pain and
frustration away – all the goodness of nature at your
disposal.
DELACET has been tested on
volunteers by many health magazine editors and writers. To

say” section below.
DELACET has also been independently

HEAD LICE - FACTS AND
FICTION
Pediculus humanus
- louse, a parasitic insect infecting the human hair and
skin and transmitting various diseases (head louse, body
louse)
Nit - the
egg or young form of a louse or other parasitic insect, esp.
of human head lice or body lice (The Concise Oxford
Dictionary)
ABOUT HEAD LICE
- Head lice are usually small
6-legged insects, which can vary in colour from grey to
brown. Nits are tiny oval shape light colour specs,
which are glued to individual strands of hair
- Nits are usually close to the
scalp where it is warm but they can be found anywhere on
hair
- To check if an egg is dead,
squeeze it between the two thumb finger nails. If you
can hear a click, it means that the nit was alive (but
not any more!) and the person has to be treated
- Head lice feed on blood sucked
from the human scalp
- Head lice are not necessarily
tiny creatures - some of them are big enough to be
easily spotted crawling on hair. They used to be
approximately 1mm long but now some reach 3mm.
- Lice can live up to 4 weeks. You
need a male and a female to mate to lay eggs
- An adult louse can lay up to 10
eggs a day
- It takes about 7 days for an egg
to hatch
- There are approx. 200 species of
human lice and some are getting bigger and tougher due
to the overload of chemicals in various treatments. They
apparently do not cross-breed
- Lice can live on other parts of
the body such as pubic area or arm pits or even eyebrows
- If you have head lice it is very
likely that your scalp will itch. This is due to (1) the
irritation caused by the substance injected into the
skin by lice when they suck blood and (2) by the
movement of insects crawling in hair
- Some people can itch for weeks
even though they are not infested any more
- Head lice can survive outside a
human body for up to 48 hours and no prolonged contact
is necessary to get infested
- You can catch head lice through
direct head to head contact or contact with places or
objects, which are infested (hats, hair brushes, soft
toys, wam clothing, bedding). They can't jump or fly but
they move very fast
- You cannot catch head lice from
animals as they do not get them. They get fleas
- There is no substance known to
humans which will give 100% protection against head lice
ABOUT HEAD LICE TREATMENT
- For the infestation to stop, all
head lice and eggs (nits) must be killed at the same
time
- Treatments which effectively
eliminate head lice will not require the use of a nit
comb as the dead insects will drop out while washing the
hair (one cannot defy the law of gravity! – if the
insects are dead, they have no power of attaching
themselves to hair and they have to drop out)
- Repeated applications are only
required in treatments which do not kill head lice and
nits after the first application
- Inappropriately, herbs with
anti-septic rather that anti-parasitic properties are
used in various formulas to fight parasites. This is why
they are not effective on lice but are more suitable for
the cosmetic industry to make soaps, face washes, body
creams, etc.
- Using the fine tooth comb rarely
removes nits as the conditioner makes hair slippery and
the comb cannot grip the eggs well, which are firmly
glued to the hair
- Prolonged nit combing damages
hair and roots. It may lead to more dandruff, irritated
and broken skin and secondary scalp infection
- Dry nit combing is more painful
and damaging to hair than wet combing but is more
successful at removing the eggs
- Nit combing with conditioner is
purely a cosmetic procedure when live lice, which are
tangled up in a conditioner or shampoo, are manually
removed. This must be repeated thoroughly many times for
at least 2 weeks and the person treated must be away
from the source of infection. If re-infestation occurs
in the meantime, this method becomes an endless and
frustrating task
- Products which require
re-applications and the use of a nit comb can be
effectively replaced by any inexpensive hair conditioner
(please check the contents for any harmful chemicals) or
a teaspoon of organic cooking oil. They will act as
lubricants and make hair slippery to allow the nit comb
to run through easily
- Lice can only become immune to
substances which do not eliminate them and their eggs
100%. As some of them survive, over a period of time
they are likely to become resistant to such products.
This is believed to be the reason why chemical
treatments are becoming less and less effective. Dead
organisms do not build up resistance because…they are
dead
- More and more health authorities
in the UK recognize the potential dangers, which the
treatments with pesticides may pose so they favour
wet-combing over the use of chemical shampoos
- There is always a risk of a
particularly resistant strain of lice developing (so
called "Super-bug"), so if you choose to use a
chemical treatment, do not repeat it over and over
again, if it didn't work the first time. By re-applying,
you might be adding to the problem of building up
resistance in lice and you might be adversely affecting
your child's health
- Be aware of the treatments which
call themselves “natural” just because they include
one or two herbal ingredients. They may still contain
harsh chemical additives or solvents, so always read the
label carefully and do not be afraid to ask questions
- If you suffer from any specific
skin condition or scalp sensitivity even a genuine
natural product may not be suitable for you. Always
clarify your doubts before you make a purchase
ABOUT PREVENTION
Parasitic infestation is not a
“normal” or acceptable part of life. It carries various
health risks and can seriously affect one’s quality of
life. In rich, developed countries such as the UK, children
should not be exposed to head lice on a daily basis. It is
difficult to imagine how the infestation was allowed to
deteriorate so much as to reach epidemic proportions.
Parents should not be put in a position where they
constantly have to spend money on endless potions and
lotions in order to treat and protect their children and
themselves form parasites. Parents are often too eagerly
blamed by the head lice treatment manufacturers for being
incompetent and not applying the products correctly. But
surely most adults can read and follow simple instructions.
If anybody has been infected with head lice they should be
able to buy an effective and safe treatment and resolve the
problem in a matter of hours. Only then will we be able to
control and finally eliminate the spread of this very
infectious condition.
The manufacturers should provide
the effective treatments and honest information about the
problem. Parents should not be put in a hopeless position of
trying to figure out what to do and how to protect their
families from parasitic infestation. Unfortunately, there is
no natural or chemical substance which will give 100%
protection from head lice.
We do not believe that children’s
hair and scalp should be permanently exposed to various
substances in order to aid prevention. The long term use of
even the mildest ingredient may lead to some side effects
and cause unnecessary financial hardship.
Unlike testing products for their effectiveness in
eliminating parasite and their eggs, the preventative
qualities are very difficult to quantify. What seems to work
for one person, has no benefit for another. And because the
issue of prevention in this case is a complex one, no known
substance can be accredited with undisputedly preventative
properties.
However there are some simple,
tried out ways of limiting the risk of getting head lice:
- Weekly “dry hair grooming”
procedure where you look for eggs (nits) and not head
lice
- Keeping long hair tied up in
buns, plats, etc
- Avoiding head to head contact
with other people
- Not using other people’s hair
brushes, hats, woolly jumpers, cuddly toys, bedding, etc
(see page “About head lice”)
- Treating an infected member of
the family immediately the infestation is discovered
(sometimes the whole family should be treated to prevent
cross-infection). Washing bed sheets, hovering carpets,
cleaning hair toiletries, washing clothes, etc would be
recommended (general sensible hygiene – but there is
no need to spray the house with strong chemicals or
fumigate it)
- Lice do not like cold so airing
clothes, bedding, soft toys, etc in the garden on a
chilly day will help to eliminate them
- Following a healthy lifestyle,
which in turn will strengthen the immune system and help
to fight off the parasites
- Daily hair washing and “over
clean” hair may encourage catching head lice
- In case of the head lice
outbreak at your child’s school or nursery, vigorous
but gentle daily hair brushing for approx 1 minute will
help to remove some insects (best done over a bath or
sink straight after arrival from school). A soft but
thick bristle or bristle-like brush would be the best
for this procedure (hair combs and nit combs are not
suitable)
- Eating fresh onion and garlic
(if you like it) seems to make the blood “ less
attractive” to parasites
- If children are run down or have
been unwell this would make them more prone to be
colonized but lice. Strengthening their immune system by
taking vitamins and minerals should be considered
All the above can be done by
spending hardly any money and will aid prevention and limit
the spread of the head lice infestation.
DID YOU KNOW?
- There is no need to check for
infestation by daily nit combing with conditioner. In
many countries people check dry hair (once or twice a
week is enough) and look for live nits (eggs), which are
attached to the hair and are much easier to spot than
head lice. If live eggs are found, logically, there must
be a louse to have laid it and therefore treatment is
required. This "child friendly procedure"
takes only a few minutes, does not require washing hair,
pulling with a fine-tooth comb or spending money on a
conditioner. It can be easily done when children watch
TV or have a chat with mum or dad. That way the threat
of infestation is turned into something positive where
the parent makes time to be with a child for this
"grooming" procedure in a stress free
situation. No better time for bonding, after all,
monkeys do it daily and seem to enjoy it - why shouldn't
we humans
- Products which kill head lice do
not require the use of a nit-comb
- If the formulation works on lice
only, this means that it should be used twice approx. a
week apart. After the first application all live lice
will be dead and drop out during washing hair. After the
second application the newly hatched insects will be
killed and will fall out during washing hair, just like
the first lot
- If the product works on lice and
their eggs (nits), then only one application is required
and the infestation is eliminated completely (the dead
bugs will drop out and the eggs will not hatch as the
organisms inside are killed)
- People with clean and dirty hair
can get head lice. The insects actually prefer clean
hair as it provides better breeding environment
- Some children get head lice more
often then others. It is believed to be linked to other
factors such as general health, body temperature,
hormonal changes, immune system and not just the direct
head to head contact
- It is possible to have head lice
and not to itch (but most people do)
- Head lice are not
"normal" part of childhood like some other
common children's illnesses
- Children will not "grow
out" of head lice and the condition should not be
ignored
- Prevention and general hygiene
play an important role in containing the spread of
infestation (but there is no need to fumigate houses!)
- Head lice infestation can cause
embarrassment, severe itching, scalp redness and
irritation, flu like symptoms, increased body
temperature, irritability, lack of concentration and the
general loss of the quality of life. Head lice as they
feed on blood inject poison into the scalp, which may
cause allergic reaction in some people (a four year old
girl needed a skin graft at the Lister Hospital in
Stevenage due to the scalp infection caused by nit
combing with chemical shampoos)
- In countries with high level of
infestation it in not a shame to get head lice - it is
almost unavoidable. In such cases it is of utmost
importance to be a responsible parent and a member of a
community and treat an infested person as soon as
possible to stop the infestation from spreading
- Head lice are not a universal
problem - there are countries where these parasites are
rare
- Nobody knows "WHAT"
head lice spread as they feed on blood and move from
head to head. In this day and age with so many blood
borne diseases head lice might be posing greater health
risk then anybody can expect
- Head lice infestation in Britain
is reported to have reached epidemic proportions and
there are no signs of it easing off (apparently some 68%
of children are infested, June 2004)
- All English speaking countries
such as Eire, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand
have a big problem with head lice infestation (the same
ineffective products are sent from one state to another)
- no need to change packaging, no language problems, no
translation costs)
- Many health professionals are
playing down the head lice problem because they simply
do not know how to deal with it any more as most
conventional chemical treatments are proving less and
less effective and some are said to be harmful
- We have noticed the increase of
body lice cases since the year 2000
- Head lice pose various health
risks and cause a lot of frustration so please do not
ignore them - the sooner you do something about them the
less they'll spread and fewer people will suffer
- When buying any product always
read the label and if in doubt do not be ashamed to ask
questions. Use common sense approach. Do not part with
your money unless fully satisfied with the answers
REMEMBER: head lice are a big money
spinner for many manufacturers. Over £30 million is spent
every year in the UK on various treatments. Lots of products
claim to kill head lice and nits (eggs) speedily and then,
surprisingly, instruct the user to keep re-applying the
product on various days and to nit comb afterwards.
